The story of Anandam Vidyalay started in 1987 when Eknath Bawankar, a native of Pauni noticed that this hamlet of 21,000 in Bhandara district of Maharashtra was served by a single municipal school of questionable performance.
In response he set up the Pauni Shikshan Sanstha and started Anandam Vidyalay, a Marathi medium school to impart better quality primary education.
Anandam Vidyalay followed 12 years later in 1999, with a goal of delivering high quality English medium education to make its students more employment-ready in a changing India. From the beginning, the method of learning was Traditional Indian Participative Learning promoted by Mahatma Gandhi and Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, unlike the vicarious learning by rote from books.
